This episode of the Music Sumo Podcast we have another wonderful treat for you listeners with Music Sumo’s first Hip Hop/Rap artist to submit his music, Levi Stress. Levi is from Anderson, S.C., but he certainly doesn’t stay in one area. In the past Levi has played in areas such as Atlanta, New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and more! Currently, on Levi’s calendar are a couple of gigs in the Atlanta, GA area and the Buffalo, NY area. Levi is even working on getting a tour going overseas to Europe. To keep up with what he is up to at any given time we urge you to visit his website at lstress.com.
Now, to get things started I have to say that I was super impressed with Levi’s new album, “’Back 2 Tha Essence’ Your Quintessential Hip Hop Tour Guide.” It is an original Hip Hop, Boom Bap-era, Mid 90’s, Pete Rock, DJ Primier type production. Levi has dope rhymes with subject matter. This album reaches all aspects of Hip Hop. It is phat on the tables, and it will make your head nod. It will make you want to pull out your old Technics 1200’s and cut again. You are going to get Hip Hop like when you were younger and you would run to the store to pick up the latest Souls Of Mischief, Del, Gang Starr, early Nas, etc. If you are a head that just wants to hear dope rhymes and ill beats this is album is definitely for you!
Nice, huh?! Well, from track one to track 14 of this album you won’t be disappointed. “Back 2 Tha Essence” is exactly what the title insinuates, Hip Hop in its pure form. No stunts or fronts. Just ill beats and rhymes produced by an up and coming track master extraordinaire and phat guests including Correseptic, 4 Letta, and Monique Isom. Levi Stress is bringing a new sound from an untapped market in South Carolina, which is a scene mainly known for crunk, club, gangsta, and/or trap music. However, there are also kids in the state that still seek more traditional Hip Hop.
Well, to please those kids let’s get back into the music. This is Levi Stress with special guest, 4 Letta, with Spell It Out:
Another project that Levi has been working on lately is a video for one of his songs, Street Chronicles. Street Chronicles is a great song about a young man who gets caught up in the street game. It talks about him having to hustle and sell drugs to get by, all the while his rivals are trying to take him out. Check it out. This is Levi Stress and Correseptic with Street Chronicles:
Street Chronicles is not the only song of Levi’s that tells a story. Like I said before, Levi has dope rhymes with subject matter. In actuality, “Back 2 Tha Essence’s” first four tracks are laid down with lyrics that have very strong subject matter, metaphors, and battle mode punch lines. Tracks five through seven show a grittier, political side to Levi’s lyricism and are also a celebration of the Hip Hop culture. The remainder of the album is masterful in sound production and in the sometimes story like lyrics. For example, Little Girl Lost tells of a young lady in college that gets pregnant and then has to finish school with the burden of having a child while trying to maintain her grades and focus on life. It is a great song that also features Monique Isom singing some great hooks.
There is a short, two minute sample of Little Girl Lost that is now on the Music Sumo website, along with other great tunes by Levi Stress. You should definitely check them out if you get the chance, and while you are there, pick up a copy of, “’Back 2 Tha Essence’ Your Quintessential Hip Hop Tour Guide.” Visit Music Sumo today at www.musicsumo.com!
