The last few podcasts we have been bringing you music from all over the country, and even Australia, but we are now back to our home of the San Francisco Bay Area. This show we invite you to get to know Devon Shane, one of the most exciting and evocative female artists in the Bay Area. In fact, Devon opened this show with her track, Tiptoe, off of her album, “Eruption,” which you can pick up now at the Music Sumo webstore at www.musicsumo.com.
When Devon submitted her album and we heard it for the first time, we knew we had to play Tiptoe simply due to the Clavinet that is in it. We are suckers for those around the office. Stevie Wonder’s, Superstition, always gets our feet moving, and the same was true with Tiptoe. We couldn’t help but get down to the funk of that tune!
Although borrowing from several musical inspirations, Devon’s progressive, blues-infused rock definitely yields a memorable style that is uniquely her own. Combining her special song writing skills with a gifted voice, her music erupts into a sonic “boon” for her audiences.
Devon Shane’s musical influences range from such classic greats as Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison, B.B. King, Donovan, and Eta James to the contemporary artistry of Ani DiFranco, The Indigo Girls, and Beth Orton. Make no mistake, she has molded these quality components into mesmerizing music that is all her own.
Pretty nice, huh? What is even nicer is the fact that Devon actually shot a music video for that last tune, Motorcycle.
The video follows two characters that are destined to cross paths. Devon Shane plays a waitress who is bored and wants some excitement. She wants someone to come and take her away. The video tells the story as straight forward as possible, inter-cut with Devon singing. By setting her story in San Francisco, it captures where Devon has been inspired, and what she has been enamored with. As we follow her day she has included the places and things that she wanted to remember: her dog, her apartment, her favorite restaurant, the San Francisco skyline, the Golden Gate Bridge, and zipping around on a motorcycle. By keeping the pacing matched to the pace of the song, it brings a serene yet exciting visual interpretation of Devon’s lyrics. Shot in San Francisco and Marin County, the film has a very Northern California, icy grey feel but transitions to a warm coastal feel as Devon Shane finally gets away. One of the best things about this video though is that it was even encoded for use on an iPod, so, we have decided to release it on the Music Sumo Podcast. Actually, you probably already downloaded it since we released right before this show. So, if you haven’t done so already, check it out! Or, if you didn’t download it for some reason or your podcast player already erased it you can check out the video at Devon Shane’s official website at www.devonshane.com. Check it out today!
Now, Devon’s stylings don’t just start and stop at the Blues and Rock genres. As you could have already been able to tell a little bit, she has also been listed as a Pop artist. Actually, that is the main genre she is listed under at Music Sumo. But, there is another genre that she is listed under, which you may be a little bit surprised at. Devon is also listed as a Spoken Word artist with her poetic lyrics to songs such as her semi-title track, Eruption Of Rhythm:
So, as you can see, or more accurately, hear, Devon Shane has a pretty broad range of musical stylings. I guess that might come from the eclectic style of the San Francisco Bay Area music scene since this is her hometown area.
A native of Mill Valley, which is just north of San Francisco, Devon Shane has started the “buzz” that has generated a fast-growing following. She has developed and refined her craft at a number of great Bay Area venues such as the Studio Z, Café Amsterdam, The Fourth Street Tavern, and the famous Sweetwater Saloon.
Devon has shared the spotlight with headline acts such as Train, American Drag, Storm & The Balls, Wonderbread 5; as well as members of Stroke 9 and Vertical Horizon. The genuine joy and magical presence Devon brings to the stage have left her audiences transfixed, uplifted and applauding for more!
Devon Shane’s rare talent, beauty and disarming charm have attracted many of the Bay Area’s best musicians; adding further to the richness, texture and depth of her music. Those who see and hear Devon Shane perform believe in her talent. After seeing her live, we are certain you will be equally impressed.
Actually, you should all check out Devon Shane at the Sweetwater Saloon in Mill Valley this coming Thursday, June 15th at 9:30pm. You will not regret it if you go! To find out more about this gig and any other upcoming shows you can visit Devon Shane’s official website at www.devonshane.com. Make sure to visit the website, and when you go see her live make sure to tell her that Music Sumo sent you!
