This podcast we have another wonderful treat for all of you because we were visited by another truly talented artist who played a little tune for us in our studio and gave us some sit-down time for an interview. This artist, Buffy, started off this podcast with her song, “Lock Stock”, off of her new album, Highs & Lows. Buffy and I have been friends ever since we met a while ago in Boston, MA, and we have been keeping in touch ever since. Semi-recently Buffy has moved out to the West Coast and is now living in the LA area and has been hitting a lot of the local clubs around there, as well as spreading out along the coast more recently.

Though her roots initially began in a small town, Buffy quickly outgrew her turf with unmistakable talent and drive. Growing up, she performed with local theater and musical groups. While in high school, she landed roles in national touring rock musicals, Hair and The Who’s, Tommy with Underdog Productions. It was during this time that she also discovered her ability as a creative musician and has since performed with groups in many genres including Funk, Folk, R&B, Jazz, Pop, and Hip-Hop.

Buffy’s knack for writing catchy melodies and engaging lyrics started landing her roles in many projects including: writing/performing with one of Boston’s hottest Hip-Hop trios, Olda Brotha Squadron, writing/performing on Roots Reggae album, Jah Works’, Revolution, writing/performing a song on Korean Pop sensation Yun Sang’s album, There is a Man, and creating music for television and film with songwriting team, The Hang Factory.

Buffy also attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts on an academic scholarship where she majored in Music Production and Engineering. At Berklee she performed with select groups including the Joni Mitchell, Bob Marley and Jazz/Hip-Hop Ensembles. She was also invited to participate in the Berklee Women’s Show at the world-renowned Berklee Performance Center. She was also chosen by President Roger Brown to sing on a children’s album for Bright Horizons, an education program. As a side project at the time, Buffy also ran a weekly indie music night at Emily’s Bar in downtown Boston. She also proved to be the most outspoken participant in one of Boston’s televised panel discussions on “Women In The Music Business.”

Since her days in Boston Buffy has been branding her sound into the memories of listeners across America. It is difficult to find a single word that completely describes her live performances. Elements of Funk, Folk, and straight-up Rock are the mainstays of Buffy’s approach, however these genres can only partially express the undisguised and organic vibe she creates in a venue of any capacity. The original sound of her voice can range from the sensitivity of Jack Johnson to the uninhibited spirit of Janis Joplin. Her lyrical content and undeniable presence on stage invokes a social awareness and sentiments reminiscent of those conveyed at a Dylan or DiFranco concert.

Buffy’s debut album, Highs & Lows, which was mastered by two-time Grammy Award winner Gavin Lurssen, was released on April 25th, 2006 to a packed house at the infamous Hotel Café in Hollywood, CA. Highs & Lows features performances by musicians who have recorded and toured with artists such as Lauryn Hill, Sean Paul, and Damien Marley. Shortly after the release of Highs & Lows, Buffy was a featured artist on the WB’s Gilmore Girls 2006 season finale on May 9th. Buffy has also opened for various artists including Veruca Salt, Starbucks recording artist Sonya Kitchell, The Weepies, Samantha Murphy, and Deep Banana Blackout.

Well, Buffy was in town the other day for gig at the Brainwash Café in San Francisco, and after her gig she came on over to the Music Sumo studio to have a little sit down with me. We had a great time talking about her trip up here, what she has been up to, and what she has in store for the future. A snake also almost attacked us while we are talking. It was pretty exciting! Let’s take a listen…

BuffyInterview

During our break we grabbed a cup of tea and continued to talk some more into the night. Buffy decided to record a little tune for all of you listeners out there as the night wore on. She was a little reluctant at first due to the fact that she had just gotten off of a gig and was pretty tired from driving all the way up from LA before that, but with the help of the tea she managed to get this out before we continued:

BuffyBeautiful Illusion

Very beautiful, wasn’t it? That was Buffy’s song, “Beautiful Illusion.”

Well, as we continued our talk we discussed many things including her new album, Highs & Lows, her gig that night at the Brainwash, her brother putting her in a clothes dryer when she was a kid, putting Barbies in a microwave, and more! She even wrote a song for me! Check it out:
