Hello, everybody! This is “Downtown” Johnny Brown wishing you happy 2007, and you are listening to Music Sumo Podcast #017! To all of you that have been with us since 2006, we thank you for staying with us and participating in the Music Sumo community! Without all of you submitting your music, listening to others’ music and leaving reviews, purchasing music, and participating in the chat room and forums, none of this could be possible. To all of you who have not been to Music Sumo yet and who don’t know by now, Music Sumo is an independent online music store dedicated to promoting and selling all independent artists’ music over the internet at www.musicsumo.com.

Music Sumo is aimed at assisting independent music artists, in further promoting their careers through distribution, marketing, and promotion on the internet. Artists are now able to sell their music online, advertise upcoming shows and releases, and be featured on Music Sumo’s regular podcast.

Some of the cool things that we incorporated into the Music Sumo webstore in 2006 are:
• A website where your fans, and the general public, can come and buy your CD’s.
• A place for customers to leave reviews of your music.
• An event calendar so you can let your fans know about your upcoming gigs, CD releases, and more.
• A bulletin board system that you can use to get questions answered about the music industry, as well as help others.
• A chat room where you can interact with your fans and other musicians in realtime.
• A way to further promote your band, music, and gigs through links and banners.
• An extensive resource of artists and other service companies in our links area.
• We now have a ton of awesome vinyl stickers that are for sale at the store. The stickers are black screen print on white vinyl. They are 4.25” x 2.75”. They are quality stickers that are suited for outdoor use and should last for at least 3 – 5 years with no fading! The stickers are $1 each, but if you buy a couple of CD’s we’ll throw a couple of stickers in for free!
• We have linked to Digg.com to bring you all of the latest music news, as well as all of the other news from around the world.
• We now have Music Sumo buttons and banners that you can incorporate into your website to link back to us.
• And more!!!

Currently we are accepting CD submissions from all musical artists for the store and if you submit your CD now you will receive 20% off the sign-up fee by entering in “sumopromo” in the coupon redemption area at the bottom of the CD submission page! So sign-up now! To find out more about Music Sumo and to take advantage of the 20% in savings visit Music Sumo today at www.musicsumo.com!!

Now if you are a regular listener of the Music Sumo Podcast, you may have noticed that I sound a little different from past shows. This is because I picked up a new piece of equipment for the Music Sumo Studio the other day. I was able to attend the MacWorld Expo in San Francisco to check out the taping of the Diggnation podcast, and while I was there I ended up picking up some goodies... We now have in the studio a Line 6 Toneport UX2, which is just awesome for small studio applications.

If you don’t know already, the Toneport UX2 is a recording and modeling USB interface for guitar, bass, and vocals. It has two guitar and/or bass inputs and two XLR mic inputs with phantom power. You can use these for mono or stereo sources, and tone process them together or separately. On the out, the UX2 can connect to your hardware digital recorder for direct digital recording of your premium Line 6 tone, as well as playback from your computer. The UX2 provides S/PDIF digital audio at 44.1/48KHz sample rates perfect for CD, DAT, and many other popular digital recording setups.

What does all of this mean? Well, it just means that the Music Sumo Podcast is going to be sounding better than it was before. Most of you let me know that you could not hear the crackling and popping that was happening in our past podcasts, particularly during interviews, but some of you could. Well, this should eliminate all of that. Yay! We just want to let you know that we make sure that the music and shows that we bring you are sounding as good as we can possibly make them sound so that you can enjoy the music more!

Some other cool new things that have happened recently are that Recast Records has signed on two new clients for booking in 2007! Recast has signed Dominic Henri, of the former San Francisco band, Farma, and we have also signed on the Bluegrass band, The Trespassers, form Yosemite, CA.

Dominic Henri has played in several rockin’ bands throughout the United States and is currently looking for gigs in the San Francisco area. If you need a bassist to lay down the law and to keep you truckin’, Dominic is your man! Check out some of his work by searching for the band, Farma, on the Music Sumo website. You can listen to some audio samples of him there. If you would like to talk to Dominic about auditioning and/or booking please e-mail me at Recast Records at info@recastrecords.com.

The Trespassers, as you may know from Music Sumo Podcast #015 are a Bluegrass band from Yosemite, CA. Their original music is inspired both by the beauty of their wild surroundings and by the decline of natural places like their hometown area. They trespass social and political boundaries, as well as the boundaries of musical genres. They also write and cover songs influenced by Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Gypsy-Jazz. Their aim is to travel around celebrating life; spreading a message of peace, love, respect, political revolution, social consciousness; and creative expression through song and dance. Oh yeah, and their touring vehicle is fueled by recycled veggie oil!

The Trespassers have also signed with Recast Records recently for booking, and they are currently keeping busy playing as many shows as possible to prepare for the busy summer festival season. They are even playing The Fillmore in San Francisco on January 27th and the Connecticut Yankee on February 9th. They also recently played on KPIG radio down in Watsonville, CA. Actually, if you are a subscriber to the Music Sumo Podcast, you probably have already downloaded and listened to the KPIG show as it was offered to subscribers about a week ago.

To subscribe to the Music Sumo Podcast simply visit the Podcast section at www.musicsumo.com. There you can listen to each episode of the Music Sumo Podcast and/or subscribe to the show. You can also subscribe in the iTunes Music Store by searching for “Music Sumo Podcast.”

To find out more about The Trespassers and to see where they are playing next, you can find them on Music Sumo, or you can locate them at their official website at www.thetrespassers.com.

Well, I am excited about this show because we have something new for all of you. This show we have our first Jazz group on the Music Sumo Podcast! This group also comes from the town where I grew up, Walnut Creek, CA. This disc features explosive, hard driving, out-of-orbit music that moves effortlessly from amazing ferocity to beautiful melodicism created spontaneously by three of todays’ leading free Jazz innovators.

Charles Lester Music announces the release of Live At The Blue Monk, featuring the Joel Futterman, Alvin Fielder, Ike Levin Trio. This recording documents a rare club date by this trio of veteran musical innovators. This trio’s first recording together, Resolving Doors, was named one of the top CD’s of 2005 by Cadence Magazine, and this new CD doesn’t disappoint either. This new CD features two hard driving, emotionally expressive sets performed in the intimate setting of Portland, Oregon’s premier jazz club -- the Blue Monk. Once again this trio demonstrates their skill in creating tight music spontaneously with compositions unfolding into unanticipated terrains. No matter how incendiary, explosive, and abstract the music, it always swings. Let’s take a listen to a track off of this new album. This is the Joel Futterman, Alvin Fielder, and Ike Levin Trio, Live At The Blue Monk.

Joel Futterman, Alvin Fielder, Ike Levin Trio – Set One: Track 1

Wow. I think Cadence Magazine said it best when they said that these musicians generate “One of a kind interactions that thrive in the spirit of the now.” Don’t you agree?

A little bit about these musicians:

Joel Futterman plays piano, soprano saxophone, and flute. He is known for his spirited, highly imaginative, and innovative piano technique is a veteran pioneer into the frontiers of spontaneous, improvised music. He is considered one of the foremost inventive and adventurous artists shaping the creative, progressive music scene today. His playing shifts effortlessly between enormous ferocity and warm tenderness. His trademark fully independent playing between the hands across the full range of the piano often sounds as if more than two hands are work. He has also mastered the simultaneous playing of his soprano saxophone while interacting and accompanying himself on the piano. Joel has performed across North America and Europe including at such noted music festivals as the Vision Festival in New York, The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the Berlin Jazz Festival, and the North Sea Festival in Denmark. He has compiled a discography of over 40 recordings including works with such notable jazz innovators as Jimmy Lyons, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Joseph Jarman, Richard Davis, Hal Russell, William Parker, and Edward “Kidd” Jordan, as well as several solo recordings.

Alvin Fielder plays drums and percussion. Al is an internationally recognized master percussionist and has been one of the true leaders in improvisational music for over four decades. He is known as one of Jazz Avant-Garde’s most musical and muscular rhythmic pioneers. While Al has performed with many noted Bebop and Post-Bop jazz artists, his passions have always moved more towards freer forms of Jazz music. In 1963 Al and several other Chicago based jazz musicians founded the Association for the Advancement of Creative Music (AACM) in Chicago. After over 40 years of performing professionally, Al still approaches each performance as a challenge and continually stretches himself and those he plays with to explore new territory and elevations. Al has compiled over 25 recordings and has performed with a who’s who of jazz and creative music including Roscoe Mitchell, Muhal Richard Abrams, Ahmed Abdullah, Sun Ra, Dennis Gonzalez, Andrew Lamb, Eddie Gale, William Parker, Clifford Jordan, Wilbur Ware, and Edward “Kidd” Jordan. Al has also performed at festivals worldwide including Germany, Holland, France, Finland, Hungary, and Italy.

Ike Levin plays tenor saxophone and bass clarinet. He is a Chicago reed player now residing in the San Francisco Bay Area where he is active in Northern California’s emerging new music scene. He displays an aggressive, brawny approach to improvisation combining expressionistic blowing with more forays of pure lyricism. Levin’s strong, free improvisational talents are rooted in a reverence and appreciation for the Blues, Bebop, and contemporary Chamber Music. He studied with the legendary Jazz saxophonist Joe Daley and Fred Anderson, he is co-founder of the Chicago based Association for The Advancement of Creative Music (AACM), he also studied composition at Roosevelt University Music Conservatory in Chicago. Ike has performed around North America with such noted musicians as Ira Sullivan, Wilbur Campbell, Robert Porter, Ed Petersen, Yancy Taylor, Smiley Winters, Kash Killion, and Oluyemi Thomas and his creative jazz and poetry ensemble Positive Knowledge. Ike also leads his own small ensembles.

Well, with powerhouses like these, of course they can create tight music spontaneously with compositions unfolding into unanticipated terrains! Let’s get back to the Blue Monk to hear some more from these wonderful musicians. This is the Joel Futterman, Alvin Fielder, and Ike Levin Trio again, Live At The Blue Monk.

Joel Futterman, Alvin Fielder, Ike Levin Trio – Set Two: Track 3

Wow. That was wonderfully crazy! I love it!

Well, that is it for Music Sumo Podcast #017, but before we go we would like to give a shout out to Electronic Musician Magazine, who in their January 21st Newsletter encouraged their readers to sign-up with Music Sumo now to take advantage of the 20% in sign-up fee savings if you enter in “sumopromo” in the coupon redemption area at the bottom of the CD Submission Page. Thank you Electronic Musician Magazine! Rock on!

We would also like to thank the Joel Futterman, Alvin Fielder, and Ike Levin Trio, of course, for providing the wonderful music that you heard on this episode of the Music Sumo Podcast.

Until next time everyone, this is “Downtown” Johnny Brown saying take care everybody, see you around the Music Sumo website in 2007, and remember to always have fun!
