Well, we are back with another episode of the Music Sumo Podcast! We are sorry for the delay in getting this latest show out to ya’ll, but there has been quite a bit going on around here lately. Here is the haps:

First, we were kept busy working at several shows throughout September. There were a lot of bands passing through the San Francisco Bay Area, including Brandi Carlile, Pink Martini, Velvet Revolver, Def Leppard, Foreigner, Styx, The Editors, and Luis Miguel. Quite a bit of shows, and it looks like the live schedule is looking pretty busy for this Fall and Winter as well! Yay! I love good shows, so this should be awesome!

Besides working the live shows, we headed down to Los Angeles to visit with friends, some recording studios, a couple record labels, and to attend the Podcast & New Media Expo!

That’s right, we took a little road trip to LA and got to meet up with some people from the famous Record Plant recording studio and some old friends from Geffen Records and Record Collection Records. We even made some new friends with Electric Skychurch Music. It was great to be able to meet up with everyone while we were down there. It was very nice seeing you all!

After meeting up with friends from labels and such, we headed to the Podcast & New Media Expo, which was a blast! We had never been surrounded by so many hip geeks in our lives! It was awesome! We were able to attend a lot of panel sessions while we were there, and we got to meet a ton of great people as well.

One of the people we met while we were there was David Lawrence, who started off this show with a shout out to the Music Sumo Podcast. You might have recognized his voice from somewhere before. David Lawrence is an American radio host, webpage designer, voice actor and author. He is the anchor and executive producer of the award-winning network music show, The Net Music Countdown. He is also an Emmy Award winner and Clio Award winner. In addition to the Net Music Countdown, he is also host of the daily The David Lawrence Show and weekend Online Tonight, both nationally syndicated radio talk shows that revolve around pop culture and the high-tech lifestyle. The award-winning shows combine entertainment, information, interviews and news with speed and humor.

David has been on the radio for nearly 30 years as a top-rated air personality. He is a founding member and former executive producer of the radio comedy ensemble, The American Comedy Network. Today, David can be heard online on his website at, XM Radio, and on terrestrial radio stations such as KBNP from Portland, Oregon. David also makes regular appearances as an industry commentator on TechTV, CNN, FOX, CBS, MSNBC, and Tribune broadcasting outlets as well as the CBC and the BBC, where he is a featured expert on Radio 5 Live’s "Up All Night."

David has also been involved in podcasting since its inception. He holds the title of ’first podcaster’ since he has been sending audio to subscribers via the internet since 1994 when he started the ’Personal Netcast’ which is now one of the most listened to podcasts as The Personal Netcast Podcast. With his long history in radio and knowledge of technology he became a leader in the field of podcasting, helping individuals and companies design their own podcast or podcasting recording system, and he even does custom podcasts for several organizations. David counts over 350 Fortune 500 and private companies as podcasting clients, either as a podcast talent, producer, designer or consultant. Each night, he voices over 25 daily podcast episodes for clients, and frequently speaks at events, including the NAB and the Portable Media Expo, on honing the skills necessary to be an efficient, professional and profitable podcast talent. As a way to empower podcasters to generate revenue through podcasting, David also developed ShowTaxi, a simple subscription management for premium podcasters. He is also the host of a highly successful premium podcast called "Patrick Tucker’s Secrets of Screen Acting: The Podcast.”

Check out David Lawrence today at his show website, The David Lawrence Show, at www.thedavidlawrenceshow.com!

I also got to meet up with tons of others while I was at the Expo. Just a few others I got to meet while I was down there were:

C.C. Chapman of independent music podcast fame. If you don’t already know about C.C., on December 21, 2004, he produced his first podcast: Reality Bitchslap Radio. The format was mostly talk, but C.C. also found time to showcase songs by his favorite local musicians. He soon made the decision to produce a show primarily to promote this kind of underground music. On January 10, 2005, his Accident Hash podcast was born. The podcast gained immediate popularity thanks to C.C.’s enthusiastic style and his love for "podsafe" music. During the summer of 2005, the Hash was one of the first podcasts to be included in the iTunes Podcast directory and it became a featured podcast on the PodShow Network. In 2006, Accident Hash was voted Best Podsafe Music Podcast at the 2006 Podcast Awards. In October 2005, C.C. also began producing U-Turn Cafe, a podsafe music podcast featuring acoustic performances. On May 6, 2006, C.C. also launched a non-music podcast, Managing the Gray, which "aims to help the business professional, through insights and interviews, stay up to date on what is happening in the world of new media, consumer generated content and no control PR." Regular topics have covered how companies have tried to utilize podcasting and Second Life as marketing tools. C.C. has also become a popular guest and occasional guest host on many other podcasts across the world discussing topics ranging from podsafe music to new marketing. Included in his many appearances is a stint guest hosting Adam Curry’s Podshow on the Sirius Stars channel.
• Mignon Fogarty of Quick and Dirty Tips and the Grammar Girl Podcast.
• Tim Bratton, inventor of Rhapsody and co-founder of the Personal Life Media Network.
• Colette Vogele, Esq., founder of Vogele & Associates, a law firm that specializes in online media.
• Karen “KFC” Blanchette of the famed Podchick Podcast and now the Skydiver Girls Podcast.
• Larry Bailin, marketing guru and founder of Single Throw, an internet marketing solutions company.
• Susan Bratton, who is the CEO of the Personal Life Media Network, and is an online advertising guru.
• Meredith Medland, the producer and host of the Living Green Podcast. Check it out. It’s pretty darn cool!
• Dan Bach, a math professor at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, CA and producer and host of Dan’s Mathcast podcast, a great podcast related to all things math.
• Evo Terra, Head Honcho at Podiobooks.com, and co-author of Podcasting for Dummies.
• David Jackson of The Musician’s Cooler Podcast fame. Check out David’s podcast today. It is a great resource for info on how to make it in the music industry these days!
• Jason Evangelho, hater of all things terrestrial radio and creator of Thimble Media and the Insomnia Radio Podcast Network. They broadcast great independent music from all over the globe directly to your computer. Check them out today!
• Mikel O.D. of the Most People Are DJ’s Podcast, another awesome podcast featuring independent music.
• Mickey Cohen of Ludwig’s Café, another great independent music podcast.
• Chris Christensen, of the Amateur Traveler podcast, a great podcast that takes you away to far off places without leaving your computer.
• The guys from The HusBand podcast, a great podcast that gives married men tips on how to remain married. It is a great podcast, check it out!
• Jasper Borgman of the Plan Nine Print Shop and producer and host of the great rock podcast, the Plan Nine Rock Show. Check it out today!

Actually, let’s take a little break and listen in on the Plan Nine Rock Show right now. We’ll be back in a moment with the Music Sumo Podcast. But for now, here is Jasper Borgman with the Plan Nine Rock Show.

That was the Plan Nine Rock Show podcast; go check it out today after listening to this show! You can find it at plannineprint.com!

While at the Podcast & New Media Expo we got to meet up with a few great independent musicians as well. While we were there we got to meet up with Von Iva, Matthew Ebel, Jimmie Bratcher, and Whitney Steele. All of these guys rocked! You should really check them out sometime! Hopefully we can get them into the Music Sumo store soon. We would love to have them all!

To find out more about these podcasts and artists please visit the podcast section of Music Sumo today. There are links to all of these people, podcasts, and websites on the Music Sumo Podcast #024 webpage at MusicSumo.com.

Another great thing that happened while we were down in Los Angeles was that I got to celebrate my birthday! It was pretty uneventful really, since we were so busy running around the whole time we were down there, but when I got back I was pleasantly greeted with a little gift from one of my roommates. He had recorded a little birthday song for me and left it on my desk at work. Check it out. This is Jeff Kalmbach with my birthday song:

Jeff KalmbachHappy Birthday, John A. Brown

Pretty cool, huh? Probably one of the coolest birthday presents I have received!

Jeff is actually the guitarist in the band that is our Featured Artist right now, RubberSideDown. RubberSideDown is an awesome San Francisco band that has been described as “a modern version of Aerosmith,” with references to Velvet Revolver and the Replacements. RubberSideDown started off the show with their song, “Give It Back”, off of their album, ZeroFighter, which can now be purchased on the Music Sumo website at www.musicsumo.com.

Let’s actually kick back and take more of a listen to RubberSideDown and their album, ZeroFighter, now with their tracks, “Black Mountain Road” and “Say Please.”

RubberSideDown – Black Mountain Road

RubberSideDown – Say Please

You may have actually already heard RubberSideDown as their music has been featured in many TV shows including CSI:NY, Beautiful People, Joan of Arcadia, Dawson’s Creek, Felicity, and Roswell. They have also just signed a booking deal with our parent company, Recast Records, and they are currently out playing as much as they can. Right now RubberSideDown is scheduled for the following gigs:

• 10/23/07 8:30pm – San Francisco, CA @ Fat City
• 10/27/07 9pm – Livermore, CA @ Pine Street Bar & Grill
• 11/10/07 9pm – San Francisco, CA @ Rockit Room

Go and check one of their shows out when they come to your area, you will not be disappointed! They totally rock!

So, we have been getting some great feedback lately from our musicians and fans regarding the Music Sumo website and the Music Sumo Podcast, and while we were in Los Angeles and at the Podcast & New Media Expo we got even more great feedback. Well, we have started incorporating some of this great feedback and have changed the website slightly and have started adding some new features!

After much feedback from our musicians and our fans, we have decided to slightly change the layout of the Music Sumo homepage. We have now put the News section towards the bottom of the page. This makes it faster and easier to get to the Featured Artist and listen to their tunes. Enjoy! This is a great way to keep up to date with what is happening throughout the world, not only in the music industry, but other facets as well. Check out what is happening in the world today in our Forums at www.musicsumo.com/forum.
